Miele Dishwasher Troubleshooting: Work the Symptom Before the Code
Four symptoms cover almost every Miele dishwasher fault: it will not start, it will not drain, the cycle has stretched, or the wash has quietly got worse. Each has an order to check things in, and the F-number is the last step rather than the first.
Miele dishwashers fail in four ways, and the fastest route through any of them is to identify which of the four you have before going anywhere near the display. The machine will not start. The machine will not drain. The cycle has stretched or the water is not hot. Or nothing is obviously broken and the wash has simply got worse. Each has its own short sequence, and following the sequence beats reading the fault code — because the F-numbers are not consistent between generations of these machines, and a code looked up against the wrong model sends you off to buy the wrong part.
Read the symptom first. Read the code afterwards, against your own manual.
Start with the power cycle, and know what it proves
Switch the machine off at the wall or the breaker, leave it a full minute, switch it back on and run the same programme again.
This is not superstition and it is not a fix. It is a test, and it splits the possibilities in two. If the fault returns at exactly the same point of the cycle, it is real and repeatable and worth diagnosing properly. If it clears and does not come back for weeks, something transient caused it — a dip in supply pressure, a suds event from the wrong detergent, a float lifted by a small amount of water that has since evaporated. Note which of the two you saw before doing anything else, because it is the single most useful thing you can tell a technician on the phone.
It will not start
Nothing on the display, or the programme accepted but nothing happening. Work down this list in order, because it runs cheapest first.
The door. These machines will not begin until the latch has fully engaged, and a latch that has been knocked out of alignment — or a rack pushed in with a handle protruding — feels shut and reads as open. Open it firmly and close it again, deliberately.
The controls. Delay start and the child lock are responsible for a proportion of “dead machine” calls that no repair could improve. Both are easy to set without meaning to while wiping the panel down.
The supply. A dishwasher whose stop valve is shut sits there looking broken. If any plumbing has been done anywhere in the house recently, check that valve before anything else.
The base tray. If the machine’s water protection has tripped, the supply gets shut off and the machine refuses to run. That is the protection working exactly as designed, and it means water has reached somewhere it should not have. It is not something to reset repeatedly and carry on with — the reason for the water is the actual fault.
It will not drain
Standing water in the bottom is the most common single call, and it is the one where a homeowner has the best odds of finishing the job themselves.
The filter and the sump first. The filter assembly turns out by hand; the coarse screen above it lifts away. Rinse both, and while the sump is exposed look for the things that end up there — a fruit sticker, a shard of glass, a fragment of a plastic lid. Any one of them can foul the non-return flap so that water drains and then flows straight back in.
If the sump is clean, the fault is downstream and it is nearly always plumbing rather than appliance. Three candidates, in the order they are worth checking:
- A new waste disposal unit with its knockout plug still in place. The dishwasher pumps at a sealed spigot and the water has nowhere to go. This is a fitting error and it appears within days of the disposal being installed.
- The drain hose crushed behind the machine. Almost always the aftermath of the appliance being pushed back hard during a kitchen job.
- A lost high loop or a blocked air gap. The hose has to rise before it falls; if it was disturbed and left low, waste water siphons back into the tub between cycles.
Once the pump itself is suspect, that is a service call. A blocked impeller and a failed pump motor present identically from the kitchen floor and are not remotely the same repair.
The cycle has stretched, or nothing is hot
A programme that used to finish in a familiar time and now runs on is not usually an ageing machine. It is the machine compensating.
These controls extend a cycle when the water arrives cooler than expected or more slowly than expected, because the wash is defined by a result rather than by a duration. So the useful questions are all about the supply: has anything changed in the plumbing, is the machine fed hot or cold, and is anything restricting the flow into it. The inlet screen at the valve is a fine mesh that collects grit over years, and after any pipework nearby it collects rather more of it at once.
The drying question is separate and it is not a fault at all. Miele dries by condensing moisture against the cool stainless tub rather than by baking the load with an element, so plastics come out damp and always did. If they always have, nothing is wrong. If they used to come out dry, that is a change and worth investigating.
The wash has quietly got worse
Gritty glasses, film on the plates, something on the top rack that never comes clean. This is the symptom with the fewest mechanical causes and the most owner-fixable ones.
Take the spray arms off — both come away without tools — and hold them up to the light. Clear any blocked jet with a wooden toothpick. Nothing metal and nothing rigid. A jet opened out with a drill bit or a file cannot be closed again, and from then on that arm throws water at the wrong pressure and misses the rack it was aimed at.
Then the consumables, which explain more of these calls than any part does. Rinse aid empty, or the dosage set too low. Detergent that has absorbed moisture in the box and no longer dissolves. On models fitted with a salt reservoir, softening salt run out, in which case limescale in the tub will confirm it before any test does.
Where this stops being a job for the kitchen
Four situations belong to a technician rather than to an evening: water on the floor or in the base tray, a burning or hot-electrics smell, a machine that trips the breaker, and a repeating fault that survives the power cycle and lands on the same step every time.
For a code, write down the exact characters and the point in the cycle it appeared, then look it up in the manual for your own model. A code names a circuit the machine is unhappy about — a fill, a drain, a heat, a leak detection — rather than naming a part, so it narrows the search and it does not end it.
One honest note about scope. This line is built-in refrigeration: Sub-Zero cabinets, and the Wolf cooking equipment that usually stands in the same kitchen. Why does a cycle that used to take two hours now take three?
Because these machines run to a result rather than to a timer. The control decides how long to keep going based on what the water is doing — how warm it is when it arrives, how quickly the tub reaches temperature, how cloudy the rinse water still is. Feed the machine cooler or slower water and it extends the cycle to compensate rather than delivering a worse wash. A stretched cycle is usually the plumbing changing, not the machine ageing.
The display says there is a water fault, but the kitchen tap runs perfectly.
The tap proves the house has water; it does not prove the machine is getting enough of it. There is a fine screen in the inlet where the hose meets the valve, and it collects grit from the supply over the years — particularly after any work on the pipework nearby. A stop valve behind the cabinet that was closed for a plumbing job and then reopened only part way produces exactly the same complaint. Both are upstream of the appliance and neither is a fault in it.
Is a failed circulation pump worth repairing, or is the machine finished?
Judge it on what else has already been replaced and on how the rest of the machine looks, not on the age alone — these are built to be repaired and a single major part on an otherwise sound machine is usually worth doing. What tips it the other way is a second significant failure within a year or two, or corrosion in the sump, which tends to mean the next fault is already on its way. Get the fault named precisely before deciding: a blocked impeller and a dead motor sound identical from the kitchen and cost nothing like the same to put right.
